The President of ACURIL, Adele Merritt Bernard, invites proposals for Poster Presentations at ACURIL XXXVIII, to be held at the Rose Hall Resort and Country Club, Montego Bay, Jamaica from June 1st to June 6th, 2008. The theme of the conference is “the e-librarian: ideas, innovation and inspiration!”

The aim of the Poster Presentations is to provide a forum for information professionals to highlight and share successful ideas and experiences with colleagues.

What is a Poster Presentation?

It is a presentation on a poster board that publicizes a service, product, topic, problem-solving strategy, innovative programme or research endeavor focusing on the conference theme. It allows viewers to walk by and observe the particular work being presented, ask questions and share ideas.

Topic Guidelines:

Posters will be presented from Tuesday 3rd June, through Thursday 5th June 2008.
Poster presentations must address any of the sub-themes of the conference:
• E-Libraries, which may include e-services, as well as different e-tools available to librarians.
• E-learning focusing on how the librarian can use technology to teach, and covering such topics as distance education, literacy skills,
• Ethics and the e-Environment, including copyright
• Knowledge content management, collaborative platforms and tools in information units; and
• Digitization, focusing on database creation

How to Submit a Poster Proposal Abstract:

The deadline for poster presentation abstract is February 15, 2008. Poster presentations can be in any of the three official languages of ACURIL - English, French or Spanish.

Proposals may be submitted by e-mail or hard copy. Proposals must include:

• Poster presentation title
• Abstract (200 - 500 words)
• Name of presenter(s)
• Position/title of presenter(s)
• Employer/institutional affiliation(s)
• Mailing address(ess)
• Telephone/fax numbers
• E-mail
  

Notification of acceptance of a poster presentation will be made no later than February 29, 2008. Poster session abstracts will be published in the final program.

Format of Poster Presentations:

No electrical support or Internet connections are available in the poster area. An effective poster presentation must visually demonstrate the key elements or significant points of a theme, product or service related to the conference. Bulletin boards will be provided to display the posters. Presenters will be required to bring finished displays to Jamaica.

• The dimensions of posters should be 3 feet wide x 4 feet high; that is, 36 x 48 inches.
• Impressions may be in paper, from a Power-Point presentation or common poster characteristics.
• Screen prints, charts, drawings, photographs, and other graphics along with text, to illustrate the presentation, are encouraged.
• Lettering should be simple, bold, and easily legible from a distance of four feet.
• Posters may be accompanied with handouts.
• All materials to be displayed should be prepared before arrival. Supplies will not be available at the conference site.

By April 30, 2008, each presenter must provide one hard copy and one electronic format document. The electronic format document must be sent as a Microsoft Word file.

The theme of the conference is “the e-librarian: ideas, innovation and inspiration!”

The aim of the Workshops is to provide the opportunity for participants to acquire new knowledge and develop skills that can be transferred to their workplace. Presenters are encouraged to relate their papers to the content area groups of ACURIL, namely Agriculture and the Environment, Health, Medicine and Natural Sciences, Knowledge Management, Organization and Retrieval of Information, and Law.

Workshops need to address the five areas identified as sub-themes for the conference. They are:

• The E-environment: Exploring trends and issues in the external environment and how these affect libraries, librarians and library users;
• E-Libraries, focusing on
  
• services such as virtual reference, as well as e-tools available for e-librarians
• the profile of the e-librarian (core competencies and skills as well as e-learning opportunities);
• e-learning, covering such topics as distance education and e-literacy;
• Ethics and the E-Environment, including e-government and copyright issues;
• Knowledge management and content generation, collaborative platforms, and web 2.0 tools in information units such as blogs and wikis; and
• Digitization, focusing on database creation, open source programs and platforms
  

Workshop Format:

Interactive workshops are encouraged. Workshop size will be limited so as to encourage interaction. Presenters are also encouraged, where suitable, to use a wide range of illustrative matter to support their workshop presentations. Workshops can be presented in any of the three official languages of ACURIL - English, French or Spanish.

The President of ACURIL, Adele Merritt Bernard, invites proposals for paper presentations at ACURIL XXXVIII, to be held at the Rose Hall Resort and Country Club, Montego Bay, Jamaica from June 1st to June 6th, 2008. The theme of the conference is “the e-librarian: ideas, innovation and inspiration!”

The Call for Papers is open to all information specialists including librarians, archivists, record administrators, and educators in the field of information science, as well as information providers.

ACURIL 2008 seeks to explore strategies and practices that will allow us to develop and use information and communication technology to the benefit of those we serve. It is intended to be a forum for persons to share ideas, innovative developments and proactive solutions to the issues and challenges we face as librarians operating in an e-environment. Papers may be practical or theoretical.

Presenters are encouraged to relate their papers to the content area groups of ACURIL, namely Agriculture and the Environment, Health, Medicine and Natural Sciences, Knowledge Management, Organization and Retrieval of Information, and Law.

To effectively explore the theme, five broad subject areas have been chosen as sub-themes for ACURIL 2008. They are:

• The E-Environment: exploring trends and issues in the external environment and how these affect libraries, librarians and library users;

• e-services such as virtual reference, as well as e-tools available for e- librarians;

• Each presenter will be given 20 minutes maximum to present his/her paper.
• It is recommended that presenters highlight key points and not read their papers.
• 10 minutes will be allowed for questions and answers.
• All presenters must prepare a full paper for inclusion in the conference proceedings.
• All papers to be included in the proceedings must be received by April 30, 2008.

The e-librarian: ideas, innovation and inspiration!

Information and communication technology (ICT) has become an integral part of life and for the librarian and other information professionals. ICT, in all its manifestations, is a vital workplace tool. ACURIL 2008 seeks to explore strategies and practices that will allow us, as information professionals, to develop and use these technologies to the benefit of those we serve.

The 38th ACURIL Conference, hosted by LIAJA (Library and Information Association of Jamaica) will examine leading-edge tools and techniques for information management and dissemination, the evolution of the web and e-resources. Successful digital initiatives and innovations, the evolving role and competencies of the librarian, and other issues of working in a virtual world will be highlighted.

The 38th annual conference of the Association of Caribbean Universtiy, Research and Institutional Libraries will be held at the Rose Hall Resort & Country Club, Montego Bay, Jamaica, from June 1st to June 6th, 2008, hosted by the Library and Information Association of Jamaica (LIAJA).

This year's theme, "the e-librarian, ideas, innovation and inspiration" was chosen to offer participants a forum to share ideas, innovative developments and proactive solutions to the issues and challenges we all face as information professionals working in the e-environment.
